In the late 1950s, the United States decided to train Taiwanese pilots to fly the U2 spy plane. At the time, the U2 was a single seat, so every training flight was a solo flight. In 1959, one of the Chinese pilots was on a navigation training flight when the engine flamed out (later determined to be a leaking fuel line) over Utah. He glided to a safe landing at Cortez, NM at night. Anyone who has flown in the Rocky Mountains will appreciate how fortunate this pilot was. The city of Cortezhad a 50th anniversary celebration of this event last October.
